This site hosts discussions and articles on everything ped/bike. The committee will post information on bicycle safety, Safe Routes to School, Rules of the Road, pedestrian access for the disabled, public transportation, the future of pedestrians and bicycles in Coeur d'Alene, and upcoming issues. I FEEL THERE ARE ENOUGH BIKE PATHS FOR THE SERIOUS BIKE RIDERS/CLUBS TO USE WITHOUT TAKING THE PARKING AWAY FROM THE OWNERS ON 15TH STREET. THE STREET IS NARROW AND THE TRAFFIC IS VERY HEAVY. IT IS UNFAIR TO IMPACT THE OWNERS ON 15TH STREET FOR A SMALL SELECT GROUP. WE LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE BIKE RIDING IS SEASONAL FOR MOST. THE BIKE CLUBS AND IRONMAN TRAINING CAN BE DONE ON 97 MILES OF BIKE PATH EAST TO WEST IN IDAHO ALONE. NOT TO MENTION THE NUMEROUS PATHS IN THE CITY LIMITS AND OUT TOWARDS SILVERWOOD. WE HAVE NO PARKING ON THE WEST SIDE OF 15TH STREET ALREADY AND THE EAST SIDE OWNERS HAVE NO ACCESS TO THE BACK OF THEIR PROPERTIES BECAUSE WE HAVE NO ALLEY'S. I STRONGLY APPOSE A CLASS II BIKE PATH ON 15TH STREET.
Bicyclists are not just Ironmen or Tri-athletes and it is not a select group....it is a large group and growing. The bike lanes are for locals, mostly children, to get back and forth to school, work or play. The other bike paths won't get them there since they are not close to where they need to go. There is plenty of off-street parking for home owners and the majority of people feel it's not fair for a small group of home owners to impact all the cyclists.
The reason the Ped/Bike Committee is involved is definately for kids and safety for ALL pedestrians and cyclists. Most of the concerns we hear are from commuters wanting to ride to work, for excercize or to go down to the lake. We haven't heard from any Ironman competitors. So no, we aren't trying to push a secret agenda.
I ride a trike, and am not sure I see a problem on 15th. There IS a problem on the newly redone 4th st which is now VERY dangerous (through "mid town"), as well as Govt way N of Appleway. The supposed bike lanes up there are extremely dangerous and way WAY too narrow.
Likewise 4th N of Appleway has had no real provision for bikers laid
Something this town sorely needs is more PD enforcement of right-of-way for bikes, running stop signs and light by vehicles, and not stopping at "stop lines" (cross walks) at intersections before proceeding. Running out of parking lots at speed without stopping at sidewalks is bad as well.
Fair warning--I've been known to throw things at you from "down there on my trike"
